Technology trends are always changing at a rapid pace. So, predictions are not always perfect. Still, we try to analyse the trends every year and follow those. Some of the trends evolves as a successful technology, and some are not so successful. Let us try to explore some of the following technology trends for the year 2019 and beyond. We will explain each in details.
Let us explore some of the technology trends that could be a big thing in 2019 and beyond
Edge computing: This is a new era after cloud computing. Edge computing is basically used to overcome the latency caused by the cloud computing platforms. It is going to emerge as IoT and other data increases. The name ‘Edge computing’ means a distributed computing environment where the computing takes place at the edge location where the nodes or smart devices exist. It is a different way of computing instead of centralized processing in a typical cloud environment. Edge computing is much more relevant in case of IoT devices, which are basically edge devices in a network. Now, the problem is – in a traditional way, IoT devices captures data and send it back to a central location for processing. It causes a lot of traffic load and latency in processing.
So, we can imagine of a solution, where the processing (partly) can be done at the device edge only. After that it can be transferred back (partly/totally) to the central location. This can be achieved by having a local device (near the edge device) with compute, storage and network capability. So, the data is processed at the edge and transferred back. Edge computing will bring efficiency and better response time.
Blockchain: Blockchain platform is going to be a big thing in 2019.Its distributed ledger technology will touch every business and evolve significantly. In this distributed ledger, each block is connected with each other. So, a block contains cryptographic hash of the previous block, a timestamp, and transaction data. Blockchain is managed by peer-to-peer network and these blocks cannot be modified easily. Blockchain is a distributed ledger which is immutable and cannot be modified by a single person. It does not have any single point of failure also. So, the points to remember are
- Distributed ledger
- No single point of failure
- Consensus based decision making
5G: True 5G is going to be another interesting area in 2019.As, cloud computing increases, there will be band width issue. And, 5G will play an important role for smooth functioning of cloud and related things. The journey of mobile communication network started with first generation communication. It enables cell phone communications. Then 2G allows efficient and secure phone calls along with text messaging. After this, 3G and 4G enables high speed connections with videos and streaming. Now the 5G will enable faster speed, low latency and efficient connectivity.
Smart Spaces: Smart space is a collaborative digital space where all the elements like people, services processes, things and technology can interact with each other. This smooth and efficient collaboration is going to increase productivity and accelerate delivery. In simple terms, smart space is an environment where humans and technology based systems can interact with each other in a systematic, immersive and interactive way.
Digital Twins: Digital twins are basically a replica of physical entities. It is used to collaborate artificial intelligence, machine learning, software analytics, IoT etc. and create a simulation of physical model, which changes as the physical real world system changes. Digital twin can be defined as a bridge between physical and digital world. In real world, there will be a virtual entity for each physical entity. The pairing between these two entities will help us to analyse data, monitor data and show new opportunities.
AI: Artificial intelligence is an ever green field and going to evolve in 2019 also. Its implementation is going to be significant in all the fields of business and technology. AI is now a part of all activities around us. It has opened up new opportunism for business growth, prediction and effective decision makings. AI based tools are widely used in industries like retail, education, transportation etc.
Conclusion: Technology trends are always changing. The trends which are relevant today, may be obsolete tomorrow. So, we always need to keep our eyes open and track the changes. In this article, we have tried to explore some of the technology trends which are relevant in 2019 and beyond.
